Entertainment chain hoist or industrial hoist?

Both lift a load with a motor and chain, but they are built for different jobs. An entertainment chain hoist, often called a chain motor, is designed for hoist production work such as flying truss, line arrays, lighting and video over a stage, with the connectors, controls and standards that live events rely on, including ANSI E1.6-1 for powered hoist systems. A general industrial hoist is built for warehouse and workshop lifting and is generally not designed for overhead work above performers or audiences. Which stage hoist: Lodestar, Prostar or BatteryStar?

The right stage hoist comes down to how much you lift and where you power it. The CM Lodestar Next Gen and Lodestar Next Gen RRS are the choice for truss, audio and video, where 1/2 ton to 2 ton capacity leaves headroom. The CM Prostar suits a theater hoist role for lighter loads such as banners, small lighting bars and scenic pieces, where a larger motor only adds weight. The CM BatteryStar solves a different problem: lift points where running mains power and control cabling is impractical. If you are between two models, size up on capacity rather than down.

How to size a stage hoist system

Start with the total hanging load, not the fixture weight. Add truss, fixtures, cabling, and all rigging hardware such as shackles, slings and clamps, then choose a hoist whose rated capacity comfortably exceeds it. Next, check the lift height against your trim height and the space above it, and consider speed: a single reeve hoist runs the chain straight to the hook for faster travel, while a double reeve configuration doubles effective capacity at roughly half the speed.
